A Central processing unit (CPU) is a device that can be programmed to carry out specific sequences of arithmetic or logical operations automatically. The ability of the Central Processing Unit to execute this sequence of operations, and its speed in doing so, make it fundamental to computers and other digital electronic devices.

The Central Processing Unit’s operation and role in computational devices can be divided into several functions.  These elements not only include Arithmetic (the mathematical calculations involved), Logic (enabling these calculations to work together), Control (influencing which computations are carried out at what point in time). But also must take into account Memory access, Input/output rates. And still have room for managing power usage, cooling systems, among many other factors.

The Central Processing Unit can be found in almost all digital devices and has become one of the key elements to keep up with technological advancements. Without this element, we wouldn’t have cell phones, laptops or any other computerized device we use today.

Today Central Processing Units are one of the most complex elements to find on any type of electronic device. The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is the ‘brain’ of your computer or laptop and handles all its calculations.

CPUs can be broken down into three sub-units:  the Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU), the Control unit, and the Bus Interface. These parts act together to process data that is provided by external devices (such as memory access, hard disk access). The Central Processing Unit basically acts as a traffic director for other components within your computer or laptop. It tells them when to access a resource and what resources they need to use in order to carry out a task. With these tasks being carried out at extremely high rates.

The Central Processing Unit was initially created under the name of the ‘Calculator’ in 1946, by John Von Neumann. And it wasn’t until 1963 that its current name Central Processing Unit was given to it by IBM engineer, Fred Brooks.

The Central Processing Unit works in such a way that when it receives instructions from the code, it executes them by independently carrying out the tasks required. Though this is not always true which can vary if we are talking about Microcodes or Assembly language programming.
